Causes of Hair Loss

We are committed to determining the cause of your hair loss. We want to help you restore your lost hair and regain your self-confidence.

At Raleigh Hair Concepts, we understand that hair loss is different for women. Most women do not expect to lose their hair and the experience can be quite unsettling, or even frightening. That’s why we will develop a treatment plan that’s right for you, while making sure you feel comfortable.

A medical condition or medication is often the cause of hair loss in women. This can be the result of a hormone imbalance, stress, nutrient deficiencies in the scalp, or even problems with the thyroid. Note that, though over-coloring, shampooing, or teasing hair can damage existing hair, it rarely leads to full-on hair loss.

Causes of Hair Loss Specific to Women

Female Pattern Baldness

It is possible for women to experience a form of androgenetic alopecia, which is to say female pattern hair loss. This typically happens in menopause, when changes in hormones negatively affect the growth cycle of hair follicles.

Thyroid Issues

Thyroid issues, insufficient iron, or a vitamin B deficiency can cause hair loss in women.

Male Pattern Baldness

For more than 95 percent of men, the cause of hair loss is hereditary. The most common factor in men’s hair loss is androgenetic alopecia, a genetic condition that is more commonly referred to as male pattern hair loss, or male pattern baldness.

Common Causes of Hair Loss

Medical treatments
Chemotherapy is a widely-known cause of hair loss, but other prescription medications and treatments can also affect your hair. Schedule a visit with Raleigh Hair Concepts before your treatment so we can match your new hair to your naturally growing hair.

Alopecia areata
This is an autoimmune issue that can cause uneven or patchy hair loss.

Alopecia totalis
This is an advanced form of alopecia areata which causes hair loss over the whole scalp.

Alopecia universalis
This rare condition can lead to hair loss over the whole body.

Telogen Effluvium
This type of hair loss is often linked to stress. The follicles prematurely enter the resting phase, leading to thinner hair.

Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia (FFA)
An autoimmune disorder affecting hair loss of the front hairline, ear to ear, normally 2 to 4 inches back. This can also develop into scarring alopecia. It is more common after menopause.

Other Medical Conditions
There are a variety of other conditions that can lead to hair loss, such as lupus and trichtotillomania (a disorder that causes chronic hair pulling). Let Raleigh Hair Concepts help determine if your hair loss is a result of an underlying medical condition.

Trichotillomania
Trichtotillomania is seldom discussed, yet surprisingly common. This is essentially a nervous disorder, yet its effect can include not just hair loss, but permanent scarring to the scalp—making future hair growth almost impossible.

As many as eight million Americans struggle with this condition, making it more common than you might think. Most often, onset is in the early teens, but it can also impact people well into adulthood. Learn more about the causes, effects and solutions for trichtotillomania here.
