What Causes Hair Loss in Men?

Raleigh Hair Concepts

Many men fully expect to experience hair loss in their life—perhaps because they have observed that genetic hair loss runs in their family. For other men, hair loss can come as a most unwelcome surprise. Regardless, and no matter the cause of the hair loss, Raleigh Hair Concepts can help you find out why you’re losing hair while also developing a plan to address it.

Our priorities at Raleigh Hair Concepts are:

  • Making sure you're comfortable
  • Determining the cause of your hair loss
  • Helping you understand your hair loss
  • Working together to choose the right treatments for you
  • Creating a natural and lasting look
  • Helping you regain not just your hair, but your sense of self-confidence

Causes of Hair Loss in Men

For more than 95 percent of men, the cause of hair loss is hereditary—but there are also other options that should be explored. For example, stress and nutrient deficiencies can sometimes contribute to hair loss, and often the best solution is a simple change in lifestyle. Additionally, there are many medical treatments that can lead to hair loss, among them radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Diseases of the scalp can also be a factor. Through extensive but non-invasive trichological testing, we can help you determine what’s really causing your hair loss.

Causes of Hair Loss in Men Include:

Male pattern baldness

The most common factor in men’s hair loss is androgenetic alopecia, a genetic condition that is more commonly referred to as male pattern hair loss, or male pattern baldness.

Medical treatments

Chemotherapy is a widely-known cause of hair loss, but other prescription medications and treatments can also affect your hair. Schedule a visit with Raleigh Hair Concepts before your treatment so we can match your new hair to your naturally growing hair.

Poor nutrition

Deficiencies in iron and other key nutrients can sometimes lead to hair loss; supplements can help mitigate this.

Alopecia areata

This is an autoimmune issue that can cause uneven or patchy hair loss.

Alopecia totalis

This is an advanced form of alopecia areata which causes hair loss over the whole scalp.

Alopecia universalis

This rare condition can lead to hair loss over the whole body.

Telogen Effluvium

This type of hair loss is often linked to stress. The follicles prematurely enter the resting phase, leading to thinner hair or to shedding.

Other Medical Conditions

There are a variety of other conditions that can lead to hair loss, such as lupus and trichotillomania (a disorder that causes chronic hair pulling).

Men’s Trichotillomania

Men’s hair loss can stem from many different causes, some of them better-known than others. For example, hereditary hair loss is something most of us are familiar with. A nervous condition called trichotillomania, meanwhile, is a little bit more obscure—and yet many men struggle with it, and its effects can include not only hair loss, but permanent scarring to the scalp.

Here at Raleigh Hair Concepts, we can provide a full evaluation of hair and scalp, and even provide solutions for coping with this condition and for replacing the hair that you have lost. Before we go further, though, let’s take a closer look at what trichotillomania actually is, and what it does to the hair and scalp.

Understanding Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania is often misunderstood. Even the word encourages misconceptions. Derived from the Greek words for "hair", "pull", and "mania" or "frenzy," trichotillomania is sometimes associated with reckless behavior—but the important thing to understand is that trichotillomania is a true mental health disorder, a stress-related condition that leads to uncontrollable compulsions. These compulsions can include pulling the hair, twisting the hair, or chewing the hair; in some extreme cases, it can even entail burning the hair.

Trichotillomania is characterized in the DSM III as an impulse-control disorder. However, it may more closely resemble the family of body-focused repetitive behaviors, which includes nail biting and skin picking. Some people with trichotillomania don't even realize they're pulling their hair, while for others the urge can be so distracting that they can't think about anything else.

As you can probably guess, those who suffer from this condition tend to have major hair loss, often in patches or “bald spots” around the head. It’s not just a matter of hair being pulled out, though; over time, this violent behavior can manifest as scar tissue surrounding the follicles, which can make the hair loss permanent.

Solutions for Trichotillomania

This condition is more common than you might think, with somewhere between two and four percent of the population struggling with it—as many as eight million Americans! Most often, the onset age is around 12 or 13, but it can also impact people well into adulthood.

Because this is a stress disorder, we would encourage those who exhibit signs of it to visit with a physician or a therapist. The problem is deeper, more internal than just hair loss, and seeking clinical treatment is recommended.

With that said, there are ways to deal with the hair loss that stems from trichotillomania. Here at Raleigh Hair Concepts, we can provide a range of men’s hair replacement solutions to restore what’s been lost—and that includes everything from laser hair therapy to men’s hair systems.
